The Derbyshire Life Food & Drink Awards give valuable recognition to hotels, restaurants, pubs, local food producers and individuals who work within the hospitality industry.
The awards would not work without your help and support as all the finalists and winners are chosen from nominations sent in by you, our readers.
“We are committed to championing the wealth of talent in the growing and preparation of food and drink around the region where hospitality plays a huge part in welcoming the very many visitors whose spending helps to boost our economy and create jobs” – Joy Hales, Editor, Derbyshire Life
While many people still question the validity of a UK Wine Industry, the very thought of it happening in Derbyshire doesn’t enter their minds.
Amber Valley Wines are on a quest to change people’s minds and buck the trend and monopoly of the UK southern counties strangle hold on the industry.
Planted in 2012 they are still young and only producing blended wines from the vineyard but with amazing results. The first vintage (2014) was sold out within 6 months of bottling, so well was it received and now their 2015 has been highly commended as finalist (1 of only 3 producers) in the Derbyshire Life Food & Drink Awards 2016.
Founders Duncan Mercer & Barry Lewis attended the awards ceremony on Wednesday 30th November with great excited for their first award nomination (no doubt the first of many!). Up against 2 beers from local breweries, they knew the competition was tough as Derbyshire is known as the micro-brewery capital of the UK.
Unfortunately, it was a case of “Close but no Cigar” this year but great pride can be taken by this boutique vineyard in the Heart of Derbyshire – judges commented :
“A superb aromatic, crisp dry white wine with beautiful citrus notes and a smooth finish. On a par with some of the best New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs”
High praise indeed!
This wine goes superbly well with poultry, so could be an excellent addition to your Christmas Dinner table.
